South Dakota Parks and Recreation Association

Best Project 2009

The SD Parks and Recreation Association has awarded the “Best Project 2009” to the SDSU Reservation Recreation Project (RRP) for their work on promoting baseball on the the Rosebud Reservation.   Representing the RRP at the conference was one of its co-founders, Bob Semrad, local retired minister.  The RRP is composed of Brookings adults and SDSU students, who use statewide donations of sports and recreation equipment to improve the lives of the kids on South Dakota’s  reservations.

The RRP provided the coaches and leaders on the reservation with enough baseball equipment to expand from 2 little league teams in 2007 to 26 teams in 2009.  There are now two leagues, one for t-ball and one for little league.  This past June the RRP conducted a day baseball clinic at Rosebud for over 70 children and 15 coaches.  In August the RRP and the tribe coordinated a trip by over 80 children to a Sioux Falls Canary’s game.  Also, baseball equipment has been sent to reservation communities that were experiencing a suicide epidemic.

Hopefully, in 2010 the Rosebud will field a little league all-star team for a week long tour of South Dakota, playing games throughout the state.

When the award ceremonies have ended and the day comes to a close.  The only award that truly matters is the ever increasing number of successes.  The best reward has always been and will continue to be seeing:

Hope come from hopelessness

Dreams come from despair

And smiles where there used to be tears.

The RRP will continue to make a difference regardless of the obstacles.  Do you have the fortitude to join us?
